What is Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens)? Why is it needed?
Every person has a natural lens inside the eye, which is both transparent and elastic. Thanks to this lens's flexibility, it changes the shape and focuses on the distance viewed at every close and distant view. In this way, we see both far and near.
With the advancing age, the natural lens inside the eye first loses its flexibility, it cannot change shape and focus when looking closer, it loses its transparency and cataracts at a later age.
Our own natural intraocular lens, which has lost its flexibility about 40 years of age, is a replaceable lens. An artificial lens called Smart Lens is replaced by our natural deformed lens. This new lens can now focus both on the distance and on the distance. A patient with a Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens) does not develop cataracts in the future.
How does the Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens) Operation Work?
Each eye is treated for approximately 10 minutes on separate days. The eyes are numbed with eye drops. There is no general anesthesia, stunning or hospitalization. Smart Lens is attached to the lens mount inside the eye during operation. After the operation, the eye is bandaged, the patient goes to his home, remains with an eye patch overnight and the bandage is removed from the eye the next day. The patient begins to see the same day. The same procedure is applied to the other eye within a few days.
Who Can Wear Smart Lens (Intraocular Lens)?
Patients who have vision problems over 40 years old, near or both, and who have vision problems at intermediate distances are candidates for treatment. Each eye wearing a Smart Lens will be able to see both far and near.
In those younger than 35-40 years old, if the eye number is too high to be corrected by laser, Smart Lens therapy can be applied.
People who have previously had an eye laser operation may also prefer Smart Lens if they experience vision loss, inability to see far or near due to deformation in their intraocular lenses.
If the person has cataracts, Smart Lens can be applied again.
